I’ve heard you can easily swap in the E36 M3 goodies.

E92 M3. Take the drivetrain from a crashed one. Put that in the 318ti and my god would that be a fun car.

Better question is “you like it!?” It’s ugly, slow, and ugly. It did give way to the 1 series, tho, so you gotta give it that.

Short butts just look wrong. They didn’t go short enough to make it a hatch back and they cut out just enough so it doesnt look like a coupe. Why would you do that, BMW?

Me too. I made an M3 with that body style for a client, a ‘98 sliding-ragtop California edition with an S52 and clownshoe rear subframe & diff, OBDII, BAR certified in CA. That car was dialed in, such a riot.

it’s not ugly! Slow can still be fun, plus get you awesome mpg.

Was the E46 compact still available with the canvas sunroof you could get on the E36 318ti?

Pretty much every part that makes up an e36 m3 can be easily swapped into a 318ti. Do yourself a favor though and just get better aftermarket bits and swap in something better than an S52.

I love the E46 compact. There’s one identical to the one you posted, 325ti and everything that always parks at a shopping center near me. I had no idea you didn’t get it!

It’s a lighter, nimbler, cheaper, yet still RWD version of the 3-series coupe. What’s not to like? Why do Americans hate these things so much? They certainly look fantastic.

If I were being unkind I’d say it’s because they can’t get past the fact that a small car can be premium, and demand a premium price.

The Compact was always a car that someone who wanted a two door Coupe but couldn’t afford one got. It was priced slightly lower than a saloon. So you got some Coupe styling for Saloon car money.

From a BMW stand point I didn’t like it especially the small headlights on the later E46.

But for what it is, an entry level of it’s time into BMW, inexpensive Coupe styling with the benefits of a hatchback it worked well. Didn’t sell well though and for the most part not accepted by many other BMW owners.

Afaik you can swap almost all the e36 stuff in except for the rear suspension.

I also think those are popular for rallying because of their size

Guy in our car club swapped a 328is motor in it. OH GOD THE NOISE

It also has m3 brakes and suspension. And a stripped interior. Because racecar.

One of these with the M3 body kit, the California slider, some suspension work, and a turbo bolted to the little 1.9L is seriously on my list of dream machines

I like these a lot too. I’m a long time hot hatch fan though.

Currently daily drive a 128i coupe. I guess BMW made the 1 series coupe just because the 318ti failed so badly here in the states, they didn’t even try to bring the 1 series hatch over here.

Uses E30 rear suspension, rather than the more modern E36 suspension, and a Z3 front suspension. I have never found them to be of any real interest otherwise.
